A small group of volunteers has been pushing to achieve a functional and lasting protection of Los Arcos. It is safe to say that every resident and most visitors to the area will have seen, visited, or at least heard of Los Arcos. They truly are the icon of Banderas Bay. You will find them on local websites, postcards, and promotional posters. Hotels and city sights are named after them. Yet, over the past decades and with ever-increasing speed today, these islets are being threatened by a combination of factors well known to all of us involved in ocean conservation. Lack of formal protection results in overuse and illegal fishing of the area, and a general disregard for the fragility of the ecosystem. Pollution, ghost nets, and irresponsible developers and tour operators also have taken their toll.

Yet, we do not give up. So far, we have been able to gather over 3,000 physical citizen signatures to promote the protection of Los Arcos and further collected over 43.000 signatures via the Change.org platform in a petition directed to the governor of the state of Jalisco. We convinced 28 out of the 29 candidates in the last municipal and national chamber of deputies elections to commit to the protection of Los Arcos in writing. We have personally met with local communities, governmental agencies, and academic institutions. A few days ago, with the help of progressive municipal officials, we managed to officially institute July 28th as the Los Arcos de Mismaloya Day.

We hope an annual celebration of this little gem is a step towards raising awareness regarding its beauty, importance, and the need to assure its future conservation. There is so much more to be done, but we trust we are on the right path forward.

Since 1975, the Arches of Mismaloya have been declared a refuge area for the protection of marine flora and fauna through a Secretarial Agreement. However, in the year 2000, with the creation of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, they were not considered as a protected natural area due to their small size, leaving them without official protection ever since. Despite this, they have always remained the most prominent natural landmark in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta.

Over time, the Arches of Mismaloya have become a popular tourist attraction, almost a must-see for any visitor, due to their scenic beauty and the opportunity they offer for a significant encounter with nature.

Within this area, you can find countless species of flora and fauna, and each of the ecosystems present here is crucial for the conservation of at least one species considered to be at some conservation risk, such as the low deciduous forest for the nesting of the Blue-footed Booby (Sula nebouxii) or the Sargassum for the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia agassizii).

For this reason, since 2022, a group of researchers and ecotourism service providers have been advocating before SEMARNAT for the official protection of the Arches of Mismaloya through a secretarial agreement that designates the area as a critical habitat for the preservation of wild flora and fauna species.

Fueron declarados desde 1975 como zona de refugio para la protección de la flora y fauna marinas mediante un Acuerdo Secretarial; sin embargo, en el año 2000 con la creación de la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, no fueron contemplados como un área natural protegida debido a su tamaño reducido, quedando desde entonces de facto sin protección. Pese a esto, han sido desde siempre, el ícono natural más conspicuo del municipio de Puerto Vallarta. Se convirtieron en un atractivo turístico, casi obligado para cualquier visitante, por su belleza escénica y la oportunidad que brindan al visitante de tener una experiencia importante de encuentro con la naturaleza.

En ellos, se pueden encontrar infinidad de especies de flora y fauna, y cada uno de los ecosistemas que aquí se encuentran, son importantes para al menos una especie considerada con algún riesgo de conservación, como la selva baja caducifolia para la anidación del Bobo de Patas Azules (Sula nebouxii), o el sargazo para la Tortuga Prieta (Chelonia agassizii).

Por esta razón es que un grupo de investigadores y ciudadanos prestadores de servicios ecoturísticos, desde 2022, están impulsando ante la SEMARNAT, que la zona de los Arcos de Mismaloya sea protegida oficialmente por un acuerdo secretarial que establezca el área, como hábitat crítico para la conservación de las especies de flora y fauna silvestre.

Por esto te invitamos a ver estos videos y a ayudar en la protección de este importante lugar, siguiendo las buenas prácticas de uso para aplicarlas en tu visita al área.

Un pequeño grupo de voluntarios ha estado luchando por lograr una protección funcional y duradera de Los Arcos. Es seguro decir que cada residente y la mayoría de los visitantes del área han visto, visitado o al menos oído hablar de Los Arcos. Realmente son el ícono de la Bahía de Banderas. Los encontrarás en sitios web locales, tarjetas postales y carteles promocionales. Hoteles y lugares de interés de la ciudad llevan su nombre. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas, y con una velocidad cada vez mayor en la actualidad, estas islas están siendo amenazadas por una combinación de factores conocidos por todos los que participamos en la conservación del océano. La falta de protección formal ha llevado al uso excesivo y a la pesca ilegal en la zona, y un desprecio general por la fragilidad del ecosistema. La contaminación, redes fantasma y desarrolladores y operadores turísticos irresponsables también han causado su daño.

Aún así, no nos rendimos. Hasta ahora, hemos logrado reunir más de 3.000 firmas ciudadanas físicas para promover la protección de Los Arcos y hemos recolectado más de 43.000 firmas a través de la plataforma Change.org en una petición dirigida al gobernador del estado de Jalisco. Convencimos a 28 de los 29 candidatos en las últimas elecciones municipales y de la cámara nacional de diputados para que se comprometieran por escrito a la protección de Los Arcos. Nos hemos reunido personalmente con comunidades locales, agencias gubernamentales e instituciones académicas. Hace unos días, con la ayuda de funcionarios municipales progresistas, logramos instituir oficialmente el 28 de julio como el Día de Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Esperamos que una celebración anual de esta pequeña joya sea un paso hacia la concienciación sobre su belleza, importancia y la necesidad de asegurar su futura conservación. Aún queda mucho por hacer, pero confiamos en que estamos en el camino correcto hacia adelante.
